Process of fixing
Replacing the HP 840 G3/G4 keyboard is a common task. First, gather your tools. You will need a small Phillips head screwdriver. A plastic spudger is also very helpful. Additionally, prepare a safe, static-free workspace.
Step one
Begin by powering down your laptop completely. Unplug the AC adapter. Next, remove the battery. This prevents any accidental power surges. Locate the screws on the laptop’s underside. Carefully remove all visible screws. Some screws might be hidden. Look under rubber feet or stickers. Keep track of each screw’s location. A magnetic mat helps here.
Step Two
Now, flip the laptop over. Open the display. You need to remove the top cover. This panel surrounds the keyboard. Gently pry it up using the spudger. Start from an edge. Work your way around slowly. Be cautious of plastic clips. They can break easily. Once loose, carefully lift the cover. Disconnect any ribbon cables. These usually connect the touchpad.
With the top cover off, the keyboard is exposed. You will see several small screws. These secure the keyboard itself. Unscrew all of these tiny fasteners. Take care not to strip them. Some models have clips holding the keyboard. Gently release these clips. Lift the old keyboard carefully. It will likely have a ribbon cable. This cable connects to the motherboard.
Step Three
Next, disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable. It has a small ZIF connector. Gently flip up the small retaining bar. Then, the cable slides out. Remove the old, faulty keyboard. Now, prepare your new keyboard. Ensure it is the correct model. Check for any bent pins. Carefully insert the new ribbon cable. Push it fully into the ZIF connector. Gently flip down the retaining bar. Ensure it is securely latched.
Position the new keyboard. Align it properly within the frame. Replace all the small keyboard screws. Tighten them just enough. Do not overtighten. Reattach the top cover. Ensure all clips snap into place. Reconnect the touchpad ribbon cable. Flip the laptop over again. Reinstall all the bottom screws. Place them back in their original spots. Finally, insert the battery. Connect the AC adapter. Power on your laptop. Test the new keyboard thoroughly. Type on every key. Check all special functions. Confirm proper operation. This completes the replacement process. Enjoy your new, functional keyboard.
