It is made of a plastic body built like a pencil and a steel pin that can be connected to clothing or other items. The steel pin is normally intended to be put into a seam or another discrete area on the item. The tag is activated at the checkout counter and will sound an alert if not deactivated before leaving the store. Deactivation is performed with a specialized magnetic detacher tool that is only available to store workers.
